The guide is composed of seven trees and two shrubs that you will see on the property. A sketch for each species and a brief description will help you identify each tree or shrub. A QR is included for each species so you find additional information on-line.

Color/Draw/Build a Bug
PRIZES! PRIZES! PRIZES!
To celebrate the end of summer and back to school, Friends of The Lorraine Cherry Nature Preserve are pleased to announce a color/draw/build a bug contest for children. Two children from multiple grades will be selected via raffle to win a bug related book as a prize.
In order to be eligible to win, have your child color or draw or build a bug and take a picture of their creation.
To enter contest just post photo on the Park’s FB page with your child’s NAME and GRADE level only.
Entries can be submitted starting on Saturday, August 13 until Saturday, October 8. Prizes will be awarded on Tuesday, October 11 @ 10:00 AM. A drawing will be held and the winners will be notified.

First: The Book of Brilliant Bugs, by Jess French.
Second: Ultimate Bugopedia: The Most Complete Bug Reference Ever, by Nancy Honovich.

Children's Coloring Contest
PRIZES! PRIZES! PRIZES! To celebrate the spring bird migration of 2022, Friends of Lorraine Cherry Nature Preserve Park is pleased to announce a coloring contest for children.
2 children, aged 6 to 9, will be selected to receive a copy of Kids Guide the Birds of Texas, and 2 children aged 10 to 12 will be selected to receive a copy of Birds of Texas Field Guide.
In addition, EACH of the 4 selected winners will receive 4 tickets to the Houston Audubon Raptor and Education Center located on Sims Bayou. To learn more about the Raptor Center, click here.
Contest rules: Print out an image from the coloring tour of Lorraine Cherry Nature Preserve, click here. Have your child work their magic to make it their own. To post your child’s single page artwork, click here anytime from Friday April 1st through Saturday April 30th. Don’t forget to include your child’s first name, age, and means of contact on artwork. All entries and means of contact will remain private.
A drawing will be held to determine and notify the winners. On Sunday May 15th at 3:00 pm prizes will be awarded to the winning families and a brief, private Bird Walk in the Forest will follow! (If it rains on May 15, the prizes and Bird Walk will be Sunday May 22 at 3:00 pm).

As of May 15, 2020 there have been 146 species of birds recorded at West 11th Street Park.
To celebrate this new record, please go and visit the Park to see the last of the Spring migration.

What’s Growing Now — Wildflower Update
West 11th Street Park has spawned native wildflowers since 2004. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of volunteers, the park is home to a wide variety of beautiful, adaptable flowers that grow prolifically along the south side of the woods. The HUNDREDS of blooming flowers attract a variety of local pollinators to the park.
